The Birth of a Nation (1915): as i watched i sometimes forgot it was made 90 years ago. feels like someone made this today and just tried to make it look like really ancient film. it has an artificial look to it. i found it very hard to follow what's really going on. strangely i found that the girls don't look much different than girls of the 20's and 30's. the movie is technically b&w, but they put colored tints over the lens, i'm assuming. this way each scene had its own personality and just added to the realism. for example, outdoors had a greenish tint and indoors was brownish-reddish. they used a yellowish-white tint for the cotton fields where all the horrible negro's worked (we'll get to that in a sec). anyways, it really does make for a beautiful effect. not that i'd expect any better, but there are the worst special effects known to man. although i have yet to see king kong. they used a huge cast for this thing. so why don't we parade our troops through the streets before sending them off to war? so they make our black brothers our to be some pretty dumb guys. it is also very anti-yankee (those are us winners). basically its a pro-southern movie. everyone take 10 seconds and think about what the world would be like today had the south won. ready . . . go! on a very random note, its funny because their arrangement for 'when johnny comes marching home' is the same arrangement i played like my sophomore year i think. so back to the movie . . . they even show good old abe to be a meanie, then a softy. was eery to watch probably the most accurate recreation of lincoln's death. although the movie is completely biased for the south, i wonder how much of it is true. it is so interesting because only the most racist people alive would produce a film like this. i don't know what the point of the opening disclaimer is (it talks about how its not meant to be against any race or the north, but its just another viewpoint of history, or something to that effect). the screenplay is very good and they should consider remaking it. and i just realized that the camera never pans or tracks anywhere. basically, in no shot will the camera ever move. makes for lots of cuts in scene. i don't think a single shot lasts longer than 20 seconds. if you want to see "the most influential movie ever made," then see this. which i do not agree or deny with. most other should steer clear because people shouldn't be this racists. it was funny though to watch the klansmen coming to the rescue of the lady in distress by them crazy black man. at the end you have no choice but to root for the klan because they are the only ones to save the innocent family. go klan!!
i hate work and hate school. need a vacation and quick.
lately i’ve been really digging the cure again. what’s weird is that its not the same stuff as what i used to listen to from them. back in the day i was really into their late eighties to late nineties stuff, basically from kiss me, kiss me, kiss me to wild mood swings. i still had all their earlier stuff, but it just never stuck with me. now all i listen to is their early and mid eighties (seventeen seconds to head on a door). and of course i have always loved disintegration. remember kids, disintegration is the best album ever. and for my own personal enjoyment, i’ve categorized all my cure albums into sub-sub-genres. enjoy! oh i will ethan.

there are a few houses i pass each night of running that are worthy of mention. they are a row about 4 or 5 houses one block from my place. i generally never notice the houses as i begin my run and trot past them. well my run each night consists of walking back part of the way so i end up passing these houses at a walking pace and they are totally utah county’s version of the hill in boulder. they are kinda big houses that are old and not the best well kept, but still nice. on any given night you’ll see a billion cars parked out front of one of the houses, trash cans knocked all over the place, a little band playing in one of the houses, parties, and crazy college looking psychos walking into one of the houses that had its door just wide open but no lights on except for some weird colored lights upstairs, and random huge screen tv's and shitty furniture all over the place. think tom's place. nice to have a piece of home with me here.
